After nearly a century, the International Plowing Match is returning to Niagara Region in 2025. The five-day agricultural event will take place from September 16-20 at the West Niagara Fairgrounds in Grassie. This marks the first time since 1926 that Niagara has hosted this major farming showcase.
The Ontario Plowmen’s Association is organizing the event, which is expected to draw up to 80,000 visitors. When last held in Niagara Region 99 years ago, the event took place in Niagara Falls and Welland. Since 1913, this annual celebration has rotated to different locations across Ontario.
Visitors can look forward to traditional plowing competitions using both horse-drawn equipment and tractors. Daily entertainment, demonstrations, animal exhibits, and local vendor displays will fill the fairgrounds. A rodeo and other special attractions are also planned.
The economic impact for the region will be significant, with an anticipated $30 million boost to the local economy. More than 500 exhibitors will participate, and a fully-serviced RV area with over 500 sites will accommodate visitors from across Canada and beyond.
Education plays a key role in the event, with more than 10,000 schoolchildren expected to attend. Local co-chair Renate McGillivray expressed great excitement for the community to host this significant agricultural event. The match showcases farming technology, promotes soil conservation, and connects urban populations with rural farming communities.
Extensive planning began years in advance. A local organizing committee is working with municipalities and organizations throughout Niagara to guarantee success. Infrastructure development, marketing, and logistics for large crowds are well underway.
The event highlights Niagara Region’s agricultural diversity and offers opportunities for volunteers, sponsors, and local businesses. As North America’s largest event of its kind, it continues a tradition of celebrating farming heritage while showcasing modern agricultural practices.
For those interested in exploring rural traditions or learning about today’s farming innovations, the 2025 International Plowing Match offers a unique window into agricultural life that hasn’t been seen in Niagara for nearly a century.
