free parking approved lincoln rockway

Visitors to Lincoln Rockway Conservation Area can now enjoy free access to the site when they arrive by foot or bicycle. This initiative follows a recently passed motion aimed at promoting active transportation while maintaining sustainability efforts at the conservation area.

The new system includes automated gates that manage parking compliance while ensuring year-round access for non-vehicular visitors. Those arriving by car will pay a $9 parking fee, which directly funds conservation area maintenance, trail upkeep, and safety infrastructure improvements.

The conservation area has undergone several upgrades alongside the parking changes. A permeable paving stone parking lot now reduces stormwater runoff and improves groundwater quality. New EV charging stations and bicycle racks have been installed to encourage sustainable transportation options.

Accessibility improvements include a new 1-kilometer granular stone trail designed for wheelchair access. However, parking fees will be suspended for 2025, allowing all visitors free access during that season. Visitors can now enjoy enhanced lookout areas with seating that provides scenic views of the Niagara Escarpment. The trail system also connects to the popular Bruce Trail network.

For those who need to drive, the NPCA’s Library NaturePlus Pass Program offers alternatives to paying for parking. Local libraries and community hubs now provide 120 free parking passes that allow complimentary one-week access to NPCA conservation areas, including Lincoln Rockway. Many passes come with backpacks containing binoculars and guidebooks. This program will double in size in 2024.

Environmental benefits extend beyond encouraging non-vehicular transportation. The new parking infrastructure includes increased tree canopy and greenspace to offset environmental impacts. The permeable lot reduces erosion while improving water quality in the area.

Visitors should note that free access is only available for those arriving without vehicles or those with valid NaturePlus Passes. Regular parking fees apply 24/7 for vehicles without passes, and non-compliance may result in fines or towing.

Future plans include enhanced wayfinding signage in 2024, potential expansion of EV stations, and continued accessibility upgrades in the next funding cycle.

Access improvements and sustainability initiatives continue to enhance the visitor experience at Niagara’s natural attractions. Careful planning ensures that accessibility remains a priority as demand grows. Find updates on local recreation spaces and conservation projects through Marketplace Niagara.
