sean kennedy s royal honor

Niagara College President Sean Kennedy stood proudly among distinguished Canadians as he received the King Charles III Coronation Medal on March 18, 2025, in Toronto. The medal recognizes Kennedy’s significant contributions to Canada and local communities, continuing the tradition of royal commemorative medals in the country.

Kennedy has led Niagara College since January 2020 as its sixth president. His leadership has guided the institution to remarkable achievements, including ranking as Canada’s top research college for two consecutive years and being named a Top Employer in the Hamilton-Niagara region three years in a row.

Under Kennedy’s visionary leadership, Niagara College has risen to become Canada’s premier research institution while creating an award-winning workplace environment.

“It’s an honor to receive this recognition,” Kennedy said after the ceremony. The medal highlights his two decades of experience in higher education leadership and community involvement.

Before becoming president, Kennedy joined Niagara College in 2006 as Vice President of Student and External Relations. He also served as interim VP Academic from 2011-2012. His career includes previous leadership roles at Red Deer College and the University of Alberta.

Under Kennedy’s guidance, Niagara College launched a new Sustainability Plan and completed the successful “Together Campaign” for transformative change. The college also saw record attendance at its Fall Open House, showing growing community interest in its programs.

Kennedy currently chairs the Board of Directors for the Canadian Bureau for International Education. He’s been instrumental in expanding Niagara College’s international reach, building partnerships for student mobility and overseas campuses. His appointment followed a rigorous selection process that began in July 2019 and attracted many exceptional candidates from across the country.

His community involvement includes service on boards of the Business Education Council of Niagara and the Niagara Sport Commission. He also supported Canada Summer Games 2022 efforts.

Kennedy holds a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Alberta and a Master of Public Administration from Queen’s University. He’s currently completing doctoral studies at the University of Toronto, focusing on leadership in higher education.

A resident of Fonthill, Kennedy continues to demonstrate his commitment to both Niagara College and the local community while receiving this prestigious royal recognition.
