sunset beach renovation project

Rejuvenation is coming to one of St. Catharines’ beloved waterfront destinations. Sunset Beach will soon undergo a $6.9 million renovation project aimed at modernizing facilities and enhancing visitor experiences. The ambitious project follows the 2019 Sunset Beach Community Vision Study that outlined needed improvements.

A waterfront renaissance awaits as Sunset Beach embarks on a major overhaul to transform visitor experiences for years to come.

The Province of Ontario is funding most of the project with a $4.4 million grant, covering 73.33% of costs. St. Catharines will contribute the remaining $1.6 million or 26.67% of the total expense. Dillon Consulting Limited has been hired to handle design work and project oversight.

Construction is expected to begin in winter 2024/25, with completion targeted for March 2027. The renovation will take a phased approach, allowing the beach to remain open throughout construction. Some areas will be temporarily restricted during active work periods.

Phase one includes parking lot improvements, boat ramp reconstruction, and shoreline protection measures. Visitors should note that the boat ramp will close starting June 2025.

Phase two will focus on park amenity improvements and replacement of the playground structure. The project is supported by Ontario’s Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program to help revitalize community spaces.

The project addresses several key needs at Sunset Beach, including protecting the shoreline from fluctuating water levels and extreme weather events. It will also modernize aging facilities, improve accessibility, and meet growing recreational demands while preserving the beach’s unique character.

Community members can learn more at a Town Hall scheduled for April 29, 2025, at the Port Weller Community Centre. Mayor Siscoe and Ward 5 Councillors will host the event. The city plans to post regular updates online and at the beach.

This renovation continues improvements that began with washroom and accessibility enhancements in 2022. The project supports multiple objectives from St. Catharines’ Strategic Plan, including economic prosperity, social well-being, environmental stewardship, and cultural vibrancy.

When completed, visitors will enjoy upgraded trails, new picnic tables, enhanced park amenities, a reconstructed boat ramp, and a new playground structure, ensuring Sunset Beach remains a premier waterfront destination for years to come.

Marketplace Niagara will be looking to provide updates as we receive them.
