urgent bike drive launched

Since 2017, Bikes for Farmworkers has been changing lives in Niagara-on-the-Lake with a simple but powerful mission. This volunteer-driven organization collects, repairs, and provides bicycles to seasonal agricultural workers who need transportation during their stay in Canada.

The grassroots initiative addresses a critical need for the region’s migrant farmworker population. Without reliable transportation, many workers find it difficult to access local stores, services, or community events. Bikes for Farmworkers offers these essential vehicles for a small fee, giving workers independence and mobility.

Over the past six years, the organization has distributed more than 700 bicycles to grateful recipients. Each bike undergoes careful refurbishment by dedicated volunteers who guarantee they’re safe and roadworthy before being passed along to farmworkers.

“The bikes make a huge difference,” says a local farm manager. “Workers can get to town on their own time, exercise, and connect with friends at other farms. It’s about more than just transportation – it’s about quality of life.”

Transportation means freedom for farmworkers to access services, build community, and enjoy life beyond the fields.

The organization relies entirely on community donations of used bicycles and volunteer labor to keep running. Local partnerships with farms, churches, and bike shops help sustain their efforts throughout the year.

Bikes for Farmworkers is now launching an urgent bike drive to meet growing demand. They’re asking residents to check garages and storage spaces for unused bicycles that could help a farmworker this season. The organization also provides essential safety gear for cyclists to ensure farmworkers can navigate agricultural areas safely.

Volunteer opportunities extend beyond bike repairs. Community members can help with donation collection, outreach, administrative tasks, or fundraising events. These contributions directly support the agricultural community that forms the backbone of the region’s economy.

Looking ahead, the organization hopes to expand its reach to neighboring communities, increase their annual bike distribution, and develop safety education programs for recipients.

Anyone interested in donating bicycles or volunteering can contact Bikes for Farmworkers through their website or visit their workshop in Niagara-on-the-Lake. Even one bicycle can make a significant difference in a farmworker’s life.
