As spring blossoms across Ontario, horse enthusiasts of all ages are invited to a special event at Rankin Farm in St. Catharines.
Beth and Tom Rankin will host their annual open house on Saturday, May 31, 2025, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. The free event offers visitors a behind-the-scenes look at Standardbred horse breeding.
Guests will meet 10 broodmares and their new foals during the three-hour event. Visitors can watch the young horses play in paddocks and take photos with these future racehorses.

The farm’s event continues a tradition started three years ago that has drawn hundreds of visitors each year.
“We love sharing our passion for these amazing animals with the community,” said Beth Rankin in a recent interview. The farm has bred Standardbreds since 1990 and produced over 300 foals during that time.
A popular “Name the Foal” contest will return this year. The person who submits the winning name will receive a $100 prize.
The event also supports two youth competitions – the Youth Literary Derby for students in Grades 3-8 and the Youth Art Derby for Grades 3-12. Both contests encourage young people to create works inspired by their farm experiences.
Though admission is free, all visitors must register by May 28. Registration can be completed by calling Rankin Construction at 905-684-1111 during business hours. Pre-registration helps the farm prepare for the expected crowds.
The Rankin farm is located at 1490 St. Paul St. West in St. Catharines. The site offers ample parking for visitors arriving from throughout the region.
Last year’s event attracted over 500 visitors despite occasional rain showers. Many attendees enjoyed their first close encounter with horses during the event, fulfilling the Rankins’ goal of introducing horses to new audiences. The open house has become a springtime tradition for many families in the Niagara region.
Farm staff note that the event fulfills the Rankin’s mission of introducing more people to the world of Standardbred horses and harness racing while providing an educational outdoor activity for families.
