joyful community service leadership

A new chapter begins at the Niagara SPCA with Amelia Canto stepping into the role of CEO in February 2025. Canto brings extensive experience from senior leadership positions in various industries, including valuable work with hospital foundations. She takes over from previous CEO John Greer and is ready to build upon his accomplishments.

“I’m excited to apply my leadership experience to the animal welfare sector,” says Canto. Her diverse professional background has prepared her well for managing the SPCA’s many services and programs. She’s particularly focused on continuing the organization’s commitment to its no-kill mission.

Diverse leadership skills meet a passion for animal welfare, preserving the SPCA’s no-kill commitment.

The Niagara SPCA offers numerous services to the community, including animal admissions, adoptions, and a spay and neuter clinic. They also help reunite lost pets with their owners, provide pet licensing, and run educational programs for the public.

Canto will oversee the SPCA’s volunteer program, which includes recruiting and training volunteers who walk dogs, socialize cats, and provide foster care for animals awaiting permanent homes. She’ll make certain all volunteers follow proper SPCA protocols and procedures.

Community outreach is another priority for the new CEO. Under her leadership, the SPCA will continue organizing fundraising events, raising public awareness about animal welfare, and partnering with local businesses and organizations. Volunteers can represent the SPCA at various community events to promote animal welfare awareness. They’ll also maintain educational programs for schools and community groups.

“We want to strengthen our community partnerships,” Canto explains. “This will help us expand our services and reach more people and animals in need.”

The shift in early 2025 marks an exciting time for the Niagara SPCA. Canto plans to enhance community engagement programs while maintaining the organization’s core mission of responsible animal care and adoption.

“There’s so much joy in connecting animals with loving homes,” she says. “I’m honored to lead an organization that makes such a positive difference in our community.”
